Sette stampe per la Divina Commedia

Serie completa di sette incisioni su rame. Bella impressione su carta india, montata su carta vergellata, priva delle usuali bruniture. Anche se l'opera è incompiuta, queste stampe sono ancora considerate tra le immagini più suggestive di Blake, grazie al loro grande formato.

John Linnell commissionò la produzione delle incisioni della Divina Commedia, che rimase però incompiuta a causa della morte di Blake nel 1827 e divenne proprietà di Linnell, che pubblicò nel 1838 una prima raccolta di trentotto stampe, per poi divulgare una seconda tiratura di cinquanta copie nel 1892. E' difficile distinguere tra le due tirature per l'alta qualità dell'incisione del 1892.

Large folio, the complete set of seven engravings; fine clear uniform impressions on india paper, mounted on wove paper, with none of the usual foxing. Though unfinished, these prints are still reckoned amongst the most powerful and moving of Blake's images and are especially impressive by virtue of their large size.

John Linnell commissioned Blake to produce engravings for the Divine Comedy but they remained unfinished at his death in 1827 and became the property of Linnell, who published thirty-eight sets in September of 1838.Another printing of fifty copies can be dated to ca. 1892; it is sometimes found in a full green morocco portfolio. The two printings are difficult to distinguish, for the printing quality of the 1892 issue is very fine and equals that of the first.
